Calanus® Oil

NOT JUST ANOTHER SOURCE OF OMEGA-3s

Calanus® Oil is a natural and highly bioactive form of omega-3 from the small copepod Calanus finmarchicus. Eco-friendly harvested, processed without solvents and from a sustainable source, this new generation of lipids from the Arctic shows health benefits going above and beyond the regular Omega 3 benefits.

The New Lipids from the Arctic

Calanus® Oil – The New Lipids from the Arctic,  is the natural lipid extract from the small copepod Calanus finmarchicus. C. finmarchicus is the most abundant animal species on the planet, and the engine of the North Atlantic ecosystem. These precious lipids are finally available as a source of nutrients for humans.

Whereas classic omega-3s come as triglycerides, ethyl esters and phospholipids, Calanus® Oil comes as wax esters. Calanus® Oil is the only commercially available marine source of wax esters.

In comparative studies with classic omega-3, Calanus® Oil has demonstrated more potency, higher uptake and additional benefits, clearly showing that the form of omega-3 is at least as important as the amount of omega-3 ingested.

The wax esters in Calanus® Oil are digested in the distal intestine, giving a slow but complete uptake, which also allows for interaction with GPR120 receptors, which are in the colon. This receptor interaction gives metabolic effects and supports insulin sensitivity and reduction of intra-abdominal- and liver fat deposition.

The Potent Anti-Inflammatory

Calanus® Oil also has a potent anti-inflammatory action through Stearidonic acid, SDA, which competes with omega-6 fatty acid GLA for the elongase enzyme, thereby reducing the amount of GLA being converted to pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid. Finally, reduced deposition of intra-abdominal fat supports adipocyte health, resulting in reduced low-grade inflammation.

The biomedical research on Calanus® Oil is done by independent researchers at UiT- The Arctic University of Norway and other scientific institutions in Norway and abroad. The researchers are encouraged by the good results.

This video shows how digestion of wax esters and release of fatty acids in the colon activates GPR120 receptors on immune cells, which secretes hormones controlling the metabolism of fat and sugar.

As per 2018 Calanus AS supplies Calanus® Oil to human clinical trials within metabolic health, insulin sensitivity and cognitive function in children.
